July 2019 - South Dakota

On our way to Montana we couldn’t drive through South Dakota without a quick stop to see Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse and the scenic drive thru the black hills via the needles highway.  There is so much more to see/do, we will definitely be coming back thru here again.

Mount Rushmore

Crazy Horse
Really glad we stopped here.  Very interesting story of how this started, the visionary sculpture and his family and how he overcame many obstacles/roadblocks in getting this started.  Completely privately funded so will take many, many years to complete. We took the shuttle ride to the base - well worth the $4/pp to get closer and hear more background along the way.

Pictures from our scenic drive

The Needles Highway - lots of tunnels

We stayed at another great Harvest Host location - a combo Winery & Brewery very close/ convenient to Mt Rushmore/Crazy Horse. We had awesome weather with a primo spot next to a creek and with the nights being so cool we got to open the windows and listen/sleep to the sound of the creek.
