On our way to Estes Park we stopped in Gering Nebraska and stayed at a really neat city park in town. We spent a day exploring Scott’s Bluff National Monument.
Saddle rock
We had never heard of this National Monument before this trip - so a hidden gem! This monument is a remnant of the great high plains that has been protected by patches of limestone cap rock.
You can drive up to the top of the bluff winding up thru several tunnels along the way.
We decided to tackle the hike up to the top of the bluff on Saddle Rock trail.
Starting our hike up!
Beginning of trail
A long climb up, thru a tunnel.
View from the top - now we have to walk back down!
The Oregon Trail also passed right by this bluff, the wagons crossed thru Mitchels pass beneath Scotts Bluff.
Mitchels Pass
We were able to hike a short portion of this historic trail as well as see replica wagons that traveled it.
Here’s a link to video we took -
Total trip around 6.8 miles, 12,000 steps and 64 floors - according to my Fitbit!
We also found a great brewery in town, Flyover Brewing Co, with great food and beer, and a place to listen to a C&W band and get some dancing in! A fun stopover!
